About the Seiko SQ 5H22

Seiko’s SQ (Seiko Quartz) range represented the brand’s core quartz offering throughout the 1970s and 1980s — reliable, well-finished, and made to a standard that has allowed countless examples to still be running perfectly decades later. The 5H22 calibre is a solid Japanese quartz movement, accurate and low-maintenance, housed in a beautifully restrained case design that epitomises the understated elegance Seiko was producing for both domestic and export markets at this time. These watches are increasingly appreciated by collectors who recognise the quality of construction and the charm of the era.

Design & Dial

The dial is a beautifully clean silver-white sunray finish, with applied baton hour markers in polished steel and matching slim baton hands. Seiko Quartz is printed at 12 o’clock, and a date window sits neatly at 3 o’clock with a white date disc. The overall aesthetic is restrained, elegant, and very much of its era — the kind of dressed-down dress watch that the Japanese market perfected in the 1980s. The case is a gently cushion-shaped stainless steel with a polished bezel ring and integrated lugs that flow directly into the bracelet, giving the whole piece a seamless, considered profile. Case diameter is approximately 34–35mm — a refined, wearable size. The crystal is mineral glass in excellent condition with no visible chips or deep scratches.

Movement

Calibre: Seiko 5H22. Reliable Japanese quartz movement requiring only an occasional battery change to keep running. The movement was keeping correct time at the time of listing. Water resistant as marked on the case back.

Condition

Graded: Great. For a watch dating from June 1986, this example presents exceptionally well. The dial is clean with no fading, spotting, or damage to the printing. The case retains strong definition to its angles and finishing. The bracelet is tight and wears well. The crystal is clear with no distracting marks. The one cosmetic issue worth noting is a long dent to the fold-over clasp — clearly visible in the photographs and the only blemish on an otherwise excellent example. It does not affect the function of the clasp and the bracelet remains fully secure.
