Casio APX-100 Altimeter, A Rare 90s Outdoor Sensor Watch, Sold Naked
Casio APX-100 Altimeter — A Rare 90s Outdoor Sensor Watch, Sold Naked
Here at Bezel & Hide, we believe a great watch speaks for itself — and the Casio APX-100 is exactly that kind of piece. A genuinely rare survivor from Casio's early outdoor sensor lineup, this is one of the more technically ambitious watches Casio produced in the early 1990s. Packed with sensor-driven functionality in a bold, tool-watch package, the APX-100 remains a fascinating collector piece for vintage Casio enthusiasts and outdoor watch fans alike. Offered at an honest market price for this model, with no fluff and no filler — just the watch.
About the Casio APX-100
The APX-100 was produced as part of Casio's early push into environmental sensor technology, a category that would later evolve into the well-known Pathfinder and PRW lines. Powered by the Module 1317 (caseback reference: 1317 APX-100), this circa 1992–1994 model represents an early chapter in Casio's outdoor adventure story — before GPS, before ABC watches became mainstream. The dedicated external pressure sensor protuberance at the 9 o'clock position is the watch's most distinctive feature and its primary engineering statement: a working barometric altimeter built right into the case.
Design & Dial
The dial is a striking matte black with teal/green luminous indices and Arabic numerals arranged in a minute-track layout around the upper portion — borrowed from the chronograph tradition and giving the watch a bold, sporty presence. At the lower portion of the dial sits a segmented LCD digital display panel showing altimeter readings, barometric pressure, and time functions. The caseback labelling reads CASIO ALTIMETER on the rotating bezel ring, with function labels — ADJUST, SECTION, MODE, START/RESET — moulded into the bezel. The case itself is a resin body with stainless steel caseback, measuring approximately 44.9 mm to 46.2 mm case width (excluding the sensor protuberance and crown), with a 20 mm lug width. Four exposed case screws add to the rugged, tool-watch aesthetic. The strap fitted is an aftermarket black rubber/resin strap at 20 mm — functional and comfortable, though not the original.
Movement
Driven by the Casio Quartz Ana-Digi Module 1317, this watch combines analogue hands with a digital display for a true ana-digi experience. Key functions include: Altimeter (with dedicated external pressure sensor), Barometer/atmospheric pressure tracking, Chronograph, Alarm, Timer, and World Time. Water resistance is rated at 10 Bar (100 metres). As with all vintage Casio quartz modules of this era, the movement is highly reliable. Servicing is not required for functionality.
Condition
Good / Pre-Owned — The watch is in good working order and all functions have been tested and confirmed operational, including the altimeter sensor modes as shown in the listing photographs. The case displays minimal but visible discolouration, consistent with age and outdoor use over three decades — this is expected for a watch of this era and adds to its character rather than detracting from it. The strap is aftermarket and shows normal wear. As with all pre-loved pieces from this period, marks, minor scratches, and surface wear may be present across various surfaces — this is the nature of a genuine vintage tool watch that has been used as intended.
